For more than 4o years, Southwest High School has been committed to excellence in theatre, earning numerous Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight awards.
This year’s fall show is the musical comedy “Once Upon A Mattress,” with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. First performed in 1959, it was later made famous by the TV personality Carol Burnett in the 60’s and 70’s when aired on CBS.
The Musical begins with Prince Dauntless longs to find a wife, but his overbearing mother–Queen Aggravain–keeps giving unfair quizzes to potential suitors. Will Princess Winnifred finally be the one to pass the Queen’s impossible test? In this hysterical musical tale loosely based on the “Princess and the Pea,” twists, tricks, and shenanigans will ensue!
